They may throw tantrums if they discover that their clothes have been washed. After the washing, they complain that the clothes no longer ‘feel right’ or ‘smell right’.

Some classic cases are assessed by child neurologists or developmental paediatricians. Others still apply for help only in adult age, at a time when it is likely that their problems will be misunderstood and diagnosis may be further delayed or inappropriate. A percentage of all adult psychiatric outpatients diagnosed as having psychosis, obsessive–compulsive disorders or personality disorders were shown to have Asperger syndrome and other autism spectrum disorders in a recent study from the south of Sweden (Nylander and Gillberg 2001).

There is a great degree of symptomatic overlap between cases with Asperger syndrome and cases with severe DAMP. Some individuals have early onset overactivity, lack of impulse control and attention deWcits, often in combination with severe sleep disturbance. A diagnosis of ADHD may have been considered or already made. A few years later, around age 3–5 years, there may be concerns regarding language, balance and motor incoordination, and the diagnosis may be ‘changed’ to DAMP.
